Let's Bake Together

Blood Orange Chocolate Scones

3 heart shaped blood orange chocolate scones

By now, you probably all know that I pretty much live for citrus season. You probably also know that blood oranges rank as one of my favourite citrus fruits to bake with. It was only natural that blood oranges would eventually make their way into one of my scone recipes so recently these blood orange chocolate scones were created.

You guys. These are so. damn. good.

When I first started making these, my plan was to have a vibrant glaze on top. I mean, who could resist a scone with a stunning pink blood orange glaze on top?

But truth is, these scones were perfect without the glaze. If I’m honest, I would have been adding a glaze for aesthetic purposes more than anything else and as much as I love a pretty picture, these scones didn’t need anything else.

Blood orange and dark chocolate are one of my favourite combinations. These blood orange chocolate scones are the perfect example of why those two ingredients work so well together. I’m fairly certain life isn’t complete unless it includes blood oranges and chocolate.

Let’s talk about how to make these. Like most scone recipes, these come together in no time and the key is cold butter. I’ve started putting my scones in the fridge for 15 minutes after shaping them to allow the butter to chill again after being worked in the dough.

To get the fresh, bright blood orange flavour in these scones I use two blood oranges worth of zest and a little juice. Not enough to turn the scones a funny colour, but enough to know that orange is a key ingredient in these cuties.

The chocolate. I used a bag of chocolate chunks because if I’m honest my knee was killing me and I was feeling lazy. Feel free to chop chocolate if you want to, or even use chocolate chips.

Heart shaped because tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. We could all use some extra love after the last year. If you don’t have heart-shaped cookie cutters, that’s ok. Any shape will work. Then you can make them all year long! Or at least when blood oranges are in season.

Grab some blood oranges and your favourite chocolate. You won’t be able to stop eating these, I promise.
